Sports fans and identity (response essay)
In the text called ‘Sports Fans and Identity’, the author discusses the relationship between being a sports fan and its effects on a person’s identity. First, we are informed about the social identity theory. Then the writer presents two studies to support the connection between sports and identity. Finally, the text ends with a study that shows the effects of winning a national football championship on the fans of the winning team. Now, I would like to respond to some of the ideas in the article called ‘Sports Fans and Identity The author argues that The groups we choose to belong to shape our identity.”
I agree with that idea because our social groups affect our personality and abilities either positively or negatively. It reminds me of my personal experiences. When I was a child, I was a scout and I spent lots of time in scout camps. I learned how to work in a team and how to manage time. I developed survival skills and explored nature. Those days helped me to be the person I am now. I am very good at organizing things and I care about wild nature. Therefore, I certainly believe that the groups we spend time together with have a great effect on who we are The author reports that people protect the groups that they identify themselves with and devaluate the other groups according to social identity theory. I agree with that idea because we tend to enhance the status of our group to increase our self-image. Also, we exaggerate the differences between our group and the others. For example, we swear at the rival team while we make positive comments on the team we support during a football game.

Thus, we reflect on how we feel about ourselves in the groups and we try to increase our self-esteem through these groups To conclude, the author gives us information about the link between the groups we belong to and our identity. I mostly hold the same opinions as the writer does due to my own experiences. Reading this article made me realize that I want to read more about it. Maybe, it will help me choose the groups I will be in more consciously and thus, increase my self-esteem.
The idea that the personality of a person is stable, has been known by many people. Though psychologists tend to differ, it is believed that the personality that a person has culminated over the years, is an integration of the various situations that the person has come up through. These psychologists have not understood personality as being stable, rather, they have understood personality as a transforming entity.
Hence, even though some of the people might believe that personalities of a person would be identified to be the same at 20 or at experts have an idea against popular beliefs. the author has tried to prove this point by referring to a different form of studies. He has made a good writer, with the help of stating older beliefs.
