It is a common belief that writing a piece of content requires exceptional effort. However, some writers are good with speed and they finish their writing work early. It is not that the writers who write fast have exceptional brain power. But these writers obtain the writing habit by following certain ritual. Every work requires some effort, but this effort will come with joy, if the task is planned meticulously. Similarly writing work for a particular day can be planned a day in advance. 1. Rome was not built in a day: The beautiful architecture of Rome was not built in a day. The completion of construction in Rome required the dedication and hard work of several workers. Similarly, you cannot expect to write a book in a single day. Perhaps, you could write the outline of a book in one day. Hence, it is ideal not to deny the possibilities while at the same time it is also ideal that we accept the practical aspects of every opportunity.

Our first tip is to start building small benchmarks and receive immense satisfaction from the achievement of these benchmarks. For instance: Let us plan to write a small article of 200 words every day and to support the writing work, let us plan to read 10 pages each day. Once you achieve this goal, you can increase your reading and writing capacity, and perhaps double it.

It is not difficult to achieve the pedestal of success; however, it requires adequate planning to reach our goals. One need not be anxious because there is some work to be completed. Enjoy the journey and you won’t even know when you reach the destination! And to add to it – let me acknowledge from my own experience that – ‘the destination is not everything’; rather both ‘the destination and the journey are equally important for a successful life’. Another way to put the above adage in perspective is that – You can only expect to achieve great work on the foundation of good beginnings.

2. Read your mind before Procrastinating: Procrastination is a common problem for most writers; but, before we talk about this subject, let us focus on the reasons for procrastination.

We procrastinate for reasons such as:

  • We believe that tomorrow or some other day would be a better day than today (But the fact is that there is no tomorrow and today is what we have with us, not tomorrow).
  • We believe that we are not adequately prepared today to face the challenge and opportunity bestowed upon us. Every day is the same, but naturally we feel that every day is unique because ‘we are unable to accept our changing moods’.
  • We fall victim to the pretentious state of mind that – ‘Other writers are in a better position to perform than us’. But this is untrue because all writers will face the same challenges before they achieve perfection in their writing task.

In order to avoid the above 3 scenarios and any other reasons that make us procrastinate, we should prepare ourselves to face the reality each day. For instance: it is important to tell us ‘that today is what we have and we should make the most of it’ and ‘everyday procrastination is like water spilling from a water storage tank, eventually the tank becomes empty. Unfortunately, our mind works in the same way, after a series of delays and failure to complete our work; eventually, we lose interest in doing the work. This is true for everyone except for those of us who are facing some other issues such as a health disorder, or some other external factor, and in that case, it is advisable to see a doctor or an expert who can more effectively deal with the problem.

3. Knowing your triggers: Triggers are your motivators and you will benefit immensely by knowing about them. Triggers could be anything, for instance: a cup of hot coffee especially consumed in a coffee shop, a morning walk, cycling, swimming, a short distance car ride, or even a nap. All of this or anything that one may prefer doing will work like a push-button – once the right button is pushed – you become rejuvenated. The enthusiasm to work will help you do more work with greater focus and that too in lesser time.

4. Developing the writing focus: In the context of this article, by writing focus, I mean developing the habit of writing with added enthusiasm. An enthusiastic atmosphere is created when you write with a goal and a clear mind. For instance: It is apparent that a cluttered mind and a tired body will be responsible for creating dull and not-so-readable articles. Developing the writing focus can be a 10-15 minute exercise which one can perform every day.

A writing focus can be developed in the following ways:

  • Join a network of writers and share your achievements and apprehensions with other writers.
  • You can also develop writing focus individually by creating mind maps or graphics. You can then interpret and elaborate on the graphic by writing content.
  • You could also brainstorm or gather points on an MS. Powerpoint presentation and later on elaborate on those points, by writing content in the MS. Word document.

The above-mentioned exercises are ways in which you can develop your writing focus. Once the writing focus is developed, it is easier to complete writing tasks within the stipulated deadline. This tip of developing writing focus applies to all types of writing tasks.

5. Mapping the development:

Our last tip is to map the development or advancements made by the writer on a daily basis. The progress mapping activity can also be done once in 3 days or on a weekly basis but tracking done beyond one week may result in loss of focus. It is essential to track progress on a regular basis. Initially, the progress can be tracked on a daily basis and then the duration can be longer, as long as you are committed to the habit of progress tracking.

Writing Development Map can be created in the following way
