Why I Want to be a Vet Tech Essay

Example #1

Choosing the career that I want to spend the rest of my life doing is something that was extremely difficult for me. It is hard to understand the concept of selecting what profession is just right for me, and what I may be interested in and want to pursue every day for the rest of my life, especially at such a young age. I have thought about different schools and jobs, as well as the pros and cons, for what seems like my whole summer and senior year. Questions troubled me, about what I wanted to do, for a while until it finally hit me. I needed to stop worrying and do something I am passionate about.

My love for animals has always been the one constant thing in my life. I have always had pets and could not imagine what life would be like without them. Working with animals is something I know I will always be passionate about. There is a saying that I now go by, “Do something you love and you will never work a day of your life.”

It is hard to say why I want to work with animals, without including the simple statement that I just love all animals. I want a career that is going to challenge me and give me the opportunity to experience and learn new things every day. I want to be able to make a difference in the lives of animals. I also want to help educate the public about the proper care of animals. Working as a Vet Tech will fit all of those needs while providing me with a rewarding career that I will continue to enjoy for years.

I have quite a bit of experience working with all types of animals. I have grown up with a variety of pets such as dogs, cats, rabbits, and the list could go on. I also have experience job shadowing at the Byron Pet Clinic, which is something I really enjoy and am very proud of. When job shadowing I figure I would just walk around and take notes but they let me be hands-on.

I got to draw blood from dogs, if the owners agreed, then test it for diseases. I also got to count pills for prescriptions. Another thing I got to do was clean anal glands, which we will not go into detail about. After visiting the Minnesota School of Business, I am entirely confident that this program is perfect for me. I love the small class sizes and the fact that there is an on-site kennel where students can gain hands-on experience. During my tour, I felt completely certain that I would love my experience at the Minnesota School of business.

Everything about the college really made me feel excited to start class and begin learning and working towards my career. I also believe that I would be a great asset to this career field. I am completely dedicated to continuing my education and working as hard as I can to get myself on the right track to being an “adult” and I am a very devoted, hard-working person and if I am accepted into the Vet Tech program, which I have been accepted to recently, I will spend the next two years is the best student I can possibly be and enjoy every minute of what is going to get me into my new career.

Every person lives to bring self-satisfaction to their life- to find a purpose. Sometimes that self-satisfaction comes from leadership jobs such as being a politician, and sometimes that feeling comes from humanitarian jobs like being a psychologist. However, that incredible feeling of self-satisfaction can also come from careers that don’t directly involve helping people but involve helping animals. For some, that career might be to become a veterinary technician.

It takes effort for one to achieve a dream and obtain that self-satisfaction, and understanding the road one must take to become a veterinary technician is just as important as understanding the road one takes after achieving it because new and exciting paths open up after that goal is reached.

What exactly does being a veterinary technician entail? Think of a nurse, but rather than assisting a doctor and helping human patients, they assist veterinarians and tend to animals. That being said, a veterinary technician must enjoy being around animals and have a desire to help those in need.

A veterinary technician will usually perform clinical work, such as blood tests, urinalysis, they can expose and develop x-rays, assist in a variety of diagnostic tests and more while under the supervision of a licensed veterinarian. The typical patients helped by a veterinary technician are cats and dogs, but in reality, a veterinary technician can tend to any type of animal. According to VeterinaryTechnican. com, many veterinary technicians work in a clinical setting such as an animal hospital or private veterinarian’s office. Additionally, many of them work in zoos, aquariums, and research facilities (2012).

A veterinary technician can also become a specialist with additional schooling to perform procedures such as anesthesia, surgery, dental work, behavioral training, and more. The Bureau of Labor Statistics claims that while many veterinary technicians find satisfaction from their job, it is also an occupation that can prove to be physically and emotionally demanding, as well as dangerous. Their statistics show that full-time veterinary technicians experienced a work-related injury and illness rate that was much higher than the national average (2011).

Reasons for this can be because the veterinary technician is vulnerable to being bitten, scratched, and lunged at by an animal, as well as being exposed to viruses that the animals might be carrying. When someone considers careers, one of the first things that will come to mind is the required education. Questions such as, “How many years of schooling do I need? ” and “What schools are the best options for me? ” need to be explored fully before making a decision. The path to becoming a veterinary technician begins with high school courses, such as Biology, Math, and Science.

For continued education, there are several colleges that offer veterinary technology programs that are accredited by the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA). A veterinary technician program must be accredited by the AVMA in order for the student to become a veterinary technician. Typically, AVMA courses take around two years to finish, granting the student an associate’s degree. Some colleges have created AVMA accredited courses that take about four years to complete, which will reward a bachelor’s degree upon completion.

veterinary states that after the student receives their degree, the student must pass a state-administered licensing exam, after which the student can start working with veterinary technicians as a trainee (2012). Naturally, the time spent being a trainee depends on the amount of hands-on experience that the student had prior to becoming one. Now that the expectations for college have been set, a person must figure out how to finance their continued education. Being able to finance college in order to get the career started is one of the most frustrating and difficult things in the United States.

College normally costs thousands of dollars and often leads to a lifetime of debt. What the majority of students do not know, however, is that there are scholarships for just about anything that can pay for most or all of the schooling! NCVTSA. org says that several awards are available from the National Association of Veterinary Technicians, but there are also private awards available (n. d. ). One of the top scholarships for this cause is the American Kennel Club and the Hartz Veterinary Technician Scholarship Program. This particular scholarship is available to full-time students who attend an AVMA accredited college.

In order to be considered for the scholarship, the student must be a student member of the National Association of Veterinary Technicians (NAVTA). Another good scholarship is called the American Kennel Club Veterinary Technician Student Scholarship, where several scholarships are given each year totaling to $25,000. The student must also be a NAVTA member to qualify, and the application requirements include a brief essay explaining their interests, education, research, and work experience, as well as recent college transcripts submitted by April each year.

Those are only two of the several veterinary technician scholarships available. Especially in this economy, an additional concern that a person might have before they begin their career is how stable the job market is and how well the job pays. No one would want to spend multiple years and waste thousands of dollars on schooling to realize that it is nearly impossible to be hired into the career that they signed up for. However, there is good news for veterinary technicians.

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the job outlook will increase by 36% by the year 2018, which is much faster than the average for all occupations. Pet owners are becoming more affluent and are more willing to pay for advanced veterinary care because many of them consider their pets to be part of the family. The Bureau further stated that there are relatively few veterinary technician graduates each year, and fewer than 3,800 students move onward to become veterinary technicians.

Thus, the market is not overflowing with recent graduates trying to become employed. While the job market may be stable for veterinary technicians, the career does not pay a substantial amount. A standard licensed veterinary technician earns from $31,000 to $35,000 a year. If a veterinary technician decided to further their education and become a specialist, depending on the specialty that they would focus on, they can earn a much higher income. For example, a veterinary technician anesthesia specialist earns, on average, $48,000 a year.

Like many aspirations to feel self-satisfied, becoming a veterinary technician will take time, dedication, and work to obtain. It may not require as much schooling as a psychologist and it may not pay as well as a politician, but earning that feeling of self-satisfaction is what counts in a career. Understanding the road to self-satisfaction is just as important as understanding the road taken after the goal is reached because life as a veterinary technician never stays the same and offers so many different paths to choose from.

Have you ever wondered who is in care of your pets besides the veterinarian, as you drop them off at the animal hospital? Well, that is the veterinary technicians of course! These trained technicians are required to assist the veterinarian and provide patient monitoring on each animal. Vet techs assist with performing medical tests to help veterinarians diagnose the illnesses and injuries of animals. Becoming a Veterinary Technician requires an associate’s degree, and is typically the most popular path.

The program is two years and covers many courses such as veterinary office management, animal anatomy, and physiology to help inform you of the education you need to be a Veterinary Tech. After finishing the two-year coursework, state law requires you to pass a credential exam to become certified.

Having a veterinary technician degree you are able to work in several different work environments. Many people think vet techs only work at animal hospitals, but there’s so many more, such as vet hospitals, a zoo, or a research laboratory.

The veterinary industry is constantly expanding due to the rapid increase of pets per household, so the jobs are constantly growing. Different career opportunities you can look into as you already have your vet tech degree can be jobs such as military, veterinary supply sales, drug manufacturing companies, biomedical facilities, and colleges and universities.

Volunteering for a Veterinary hospital a few months ago, I was able to observe and experience a lot of the tasks veterinary technicians have to perform every day. As I was observing I was introduced to a vet tech named Ashley and she explained to me the duties they were required to do there. She attended the veterinary technician program a few years back and said it was extremely helpful.

Ashley showed me how they put catheters in the animals’ arms to draw blood, give them their medicine for pain, due to injury, as well as anesthesia before dental cleanings and surgeries. After observing for about a week I decided to get my new puppy neutered there since she explained to me the benefits it has in the long run. I brought my puppy in and was able to watch the whole procedure! As my volunteering came to an end I asked Ashley “any tips for the future?” and she said, “It isn’t as easy as it looks, the job requires a lot of time, education, and practice.”

Example #4

The topic I chose was veterinarians.  What is a vet (short for a veterinarian)?  Vets are animal doctors says Dee Ready.  They care for sick animals.  Just as people visit the doctor when they are sick, animals need help from doctors too says Betsy Imershein. What do veterinarians do?  The vet may operate, fix a broken bone, or give an animal a shot.  Whatever is wrong with an animal is what the vet has to do. There are different kinds of vets.  Some care for pets.

This includes dogs, cats, birds, and things of that nature.  Others care for farm animals.  This includes cows, pigs, goats, sheep, horses, or other things you would find on a farm.  The large animal vet makes house calls says Rod Bellville and Cheryl Walt Bellville and they also said that large animal vets frequently vaccinate small animals during a farm visit.  Other vets work at the zoo and they never know what they have to work on, like lions, tigers, and monkeys.

What do veterinarians wear?  When they are in a lab, they wear lab coats.  When they are on a farm, they wear coveralls and tall rubber boots, according to what environment they are in decides. What tools do veterinarians use?  They use the same type as human doctors but made for animals like a stethoscope and syringes.

How many schools do you have to take? You go to college for two years. Then you have to take four years of vet school then after all that, you have to take a state exam.

Where do they generally work? When the vet is in an animal hospital, he will be in the examining rooms,
operating rooms, and then the sick ones may stay to be watched closely. Farm vets have to go to the sick animals often because the animal is too big to take to him. People help veterinarians. Vets need help with their work says Betsy Imershein. The person helps by answering the phones and plans visits.  Sometimes the person helps with operations or assists the vet.

The pay scale is different.  It is according to what kind of vet you are. Large animal vets earn between $37,000.00 and $37,500.00. A mixed animal vet gets $35,000.00. A small animal vet gets between $36,300.00 to $37,600.00. The biggest task of all vets is to help others. They help animals and people. They take care of and help heal peoples pets. A farm animal vet helps farm animals have babies.  Most of all vets show people how to care for their animals said, Grant Compton.

Example #5 – Interesting ideas

Being a vet tech is not something that you can just pick up online. Let me ask you this, let us say you are hurt in a car accident and you get to choose between two surgeons. One of them is a Harvard grad and has 1-year experience. The other got his degree online and has 1-year experience. By the way, it is brain surgery you need. Which doctor would you want?

Even if both doctors where Harvard grads and 1 of them had assistants from online universities which one would you choose?

I work with animals all the time and know that how some animals react to certain things can not be learned without experience. You can not get that experience online, it has to be the real world.

I agree that you should talk to your local vets, some of them have an apprentice program where you can shadow them for a period of time to be sure this is for you. You can also get a job doing odds and ins at a vets office without any training.

I would start with a personal story and how Vet Tech has changed your life or helped you become who you are today. Then connect it to how their school/program fits YOU (personally) the best out of all the programs. Talk about what you are looking for and what you plan to achieve and finally what you could bring to that program. Good luck, and I know, I HATE papers too.
