Football and Soccer Compare and Contrast. Football and soccer have never been really compared before, probably because a lot of people think they don’t have many similarities. But they actually have a lot more in common than people think they do.
Having played both sports myself I can tell you that they are very different in various ways, but also very alike. It depends on what aspects you look at it that you can see differences or similarities. Off-field soccer and football share different backgrounds. On-field comparisons are never talked about but they actually have some similarities.

Yes, football is more of a contact sport, and soccer more of a technique sport. But football does have a technique as well, and soccer contact. On the field, both teams rely on team play to move up the field and try to score on the opposing team. Both sports have a total of 22 players on the field, 11 on each team, and passing the ball to teammates is key. In both sports, the offensive players take most of the glory and the spotlight, but its know that without a good defense, it’s hard to win. You can score all the points you want but if they score more points on you then you’re still losing.
Scoring is very different though. On football, each time you score is called a touchdown, and it’s given 6 points plus and extra point to try to make it 7. Soccer scoring its only 1 point and its not called touchdown but its called gol. The game of football has a lot more breaks during it, and it has 4 quarters. During each play, you have small breaks, plus a lot of timeouts and tv commercial breaks. Soccer is a non-stop sport with only 2 halves and no breaks during each half, just the 30-minute halftime break.
One of the main differences in both these sports in my mind is that football is only a sport played in the United States, while soccer is a worldwide know sport. Soccer means a lot in many countries all over the world, and there are tournaments that bring every team all over the world together. Football’s major event is held here in the United States and it only involves one country. The United States has soccer, but it’s one of their least successful sports economically and physically.
It has failed to reach the fan base they wanted, and the MLS (soccer league) was close to being shut down due to a lack of fans and lack of income. Soccer is like a religion in many countries all over the world and it means everything to its fans. Where I’m from, Argentina, soccer is bigger than anything. A lot of people take soccer even more seriously than their jobs. Sometimes a little too serious. There has been a lot of soccer-related accidents in Argentina and many other parts of the world. Many of the accidents occur during games in the stands. Soccer rivalries are very big in Argentina. Sometimes they separate towns.
Just like gangs here in the United States, soccer fans fight for respect and hate towards the other team, a lot of times ending in deaths. Other incidents occur off the field. A good example to show how serious fans take the game is the incident that occurs after a World Cup when a Colombian player scored an own goal during an important game, and he was assassinated a few days later. Things like that usually never happen here in the United States. Not to say that fans are no passionate about football, but its a different type of passion.
The United States understands how important soccer is worldwide, and they have tried to make soccer bigger here in the United States, but have failed several times. They have tried to publish soccer more by advertising and by trying to bring famous players all over the world to play here in the United States. Living here in the US, I saw that football was the major sport here. But there are a lot of competing sports like basketball and baseball, and there are also college sports, which are also very big here.
In Argentina, there are of course many other sports, but none come close to soccer. As a little kid, I never knew of any other sport than soccer. Every little kid growing up wants to be a soccer player when they’re older. And that doesn’t sound like a problem, but in my opinion, it is. A lot of kids growing up have “dream jobs”. Some are sports-related some are not. A lot of kids dream of being doctors, lawyers, firemen, and of course start athletes. But in Argentina, most of the kids wanna be the only thing they knew growing up, a soccer player.
And with most of those kids not reaching that dream, it leaves a lot of confused kids. So as most people think, there are many differences overall between football and soccer. But there are more similarities than people think there are. Maybe in the future with the growth of soccer in the United States, we will have even more things in common. And maybe the passion for soccer here in the US will one day be as big as it is in the rest of the world, but hopefully without all the violence.
It s the sound of helmets crashing, people yelling, the smell of sweat, the feel of pigskin, and the taste of blood. Football, it is the only real contact sport. Who are better the NFL players or collegiate players? The leagues are about the same; about football, yet they are completely different.
In the NFL, players know the fundamentals and know what their opponent s game plan is all about. They practice four or five times a week because this is their job and they take it very seriously. There are only 31 teams currently in the NFL the talent is broken up into about every team. They sometimes know what their opposing team is going to do a week in advance. The pros are beefed up from training during the offseason or just from eating.
Collegiate athletes are just kids. Some are really dedicated to the game while others are not. Some train and practice all the time, so they can get better. Others just use their good skills to get them by. Since there are so many schools the talent is spread throughout the country. They don t have the time as the pros to work out, practice, and learn a team s playbook because they have to worry about going to school.
The NFL and collegiate athletes are very similar though. They both are devoted to the game of football. They are played about the same. The
Rules differ just a bit. The idea is to beat your opponent down then score on them. Whoever scores the most points at the end of the game wins.
Something as basic as football can really be different. Just the performance of amateurs compared to that of the pros in the NFL is very noticeable. Football is still played the same. No matter where you go there is somebody playing this great game.
Football is a rugged outdoor game played on a rectangular field by two teams using an inflated ball. High school football, in general, follows the college rules. The differences between high school and college football, and to a lesser extent between college and professional football, stem partly from the rule changes designed to protect the players from injury.
At each end of the football field is a goal line defended by one of the teams, and a pair of goalposts joined by a raised horizontal bar.
The object is to score points by moving the ball across the opponents’ goal, or by kicking it between their goalposts (Aiken, 2001). The ball can be moved either by carrying it or passing it (throwing it to a teammate). The game is usually played for a fixed period of time; the team with more points at the end of that ship games, the final result can be a tie.
Football is played by more than 25 major-league professional teams, more than 600 college teams, as well as by a number of minor-league professional clubs, semiprofessional and amateur teams, and clubs for youngsters below high school age.
On the other hand, soccer is the world’s most popular team sport. It is called “soccer” in the United States, “association football” in Great Britain, and simply “football” in most other countries. It is the national sport in many countries. In the United States has a growing following among adults, and is popular as an organized sport for youngsters and as a high school and college sport.
Soccer is normally played on a rectangular grass field. Just like the football field, it has a goal of two vertical posts with a crossbar and a net in the back at each end (Widdows, 2004). The object is to score points by knocking an inflated round ball into the opponents’ goal without using hands or arms which is opposite in football for its player can kick or pass as mentioned earlier. The game lasts for a fixed amount of time and the result may be a tie except in certain championship games.
There is no much difference between soccer and football except for its ball, number of players, and the measurements they have for their fields. In football, it is played on a field 100 yards (91.4 m) long (120 yards [109.7 m] including the two end zones) and 53 1/3 yards (48.8 m) wide. White stripes, called the yard lines, run across the filed at 5-yard (4.6m) intervals, giving the field a gridlike appearance that has led to its being called a gridiron.
Two inbounds lines, each made up of a series of short stripes called hash marks, mark off the main playing area. The ball must be between the inbounds lines each time it is put into play. Between the goal line and the end line at either end of the field is an end zone 10 yards (9.1 m) deep.
The goalposts (officially called goals) are centered on the end line. The professional goal is a wishbone-shaped structure with two poles, called uprights, connected by a crossbar that is 18 ½ feet (5.6 m) long. The uprights, which begin at the crossbar, extend a minimum of 30 feet (9.1 m) above the crossbar. A single-pole centered under the crossbar above the end line. The traditional college goal consists of two poles set 23 1/3 feet (7.1 m) apart, connected by a crossbar 10 feet (3 m) above the ground. The two poles extend to 10 or more feet beyond the crossbar.
Many colleges, however, use a professional type of goal built to college dimensions. The ball is an oval inflated rubber bladder covered with pebble-grained leather or rubber (not, as its nickname implies, with pigskin). It measures 11 to 11 ¼ inches (about 28 cm) in length and weighs 14 to 15 ounces (397 to 425 g). The circumference at its greatest width is 21 ¼ to 21 ½ inches (about 54 cm). Moreover, the players wear numbered jerseys, knee-length pants, plastic helmets with face guards, and protective shoulder, hip, and knee pads that are most likely the same with soccer (Wilkinson 2002).
The football team ordinarily consists of between 20 and 60 players. Each team is allowed to have 11 players on the field at any given time during the game. Liberal substitution rules permit a team to use a two-platoon system—one group of players for an offense (when the team is in possession of the ball) and a second group for distance while in soccer, the field measures from 100 to 130 yards (90-120m) in length and from 50 to 100 yards (45-90m) in width (Aiken 2001). The most common size in the United States is 120 by 75 yards.
Each corner is marked with a flag. Each goal is 8 yards (7.32 m) wide and 8 ft. (2.44 m) high and deep. The leather- or rubber-covered ball is 27 to 28 inches (69-71 cm) in circumference and weighs 14 to 16 ounces. Players wear jerseys, shorts, knee socks, shin pads, and cleated shoes (Widdows, 2004). In addition, there is also an indoor version of the game, played mainly by professional teams in the United States. The playing area is much smaller than a regulation outdoor field, with the result that the game is faster and higher scoring. Each team fields 11 players: a goalkeeper; four defensive players; two or three midfield players; and three or four forwards, depending on the team’s tactics.
Generally, a limited number of substitutions are allowed. There are three officials: a referee and two linesmen. Most games consist of 45-minute halves with a short rest period in between. High school games sometimes are divided into quarters. After a kickoff from the center circle, the players attempt to advance the ball toward the opponent’s goal by kicking it, bouncing it off their bodies, or butting it with their heads (Lever 2004). They must be adept at dribbling and passing the ball with their feet. The goalkeepers are the only players who may touch the ball with their hands while it is in play.
Unnecessary roughness, handling of the ball of player other than the goalkeeper, and other fouls are penalized by awarding the fouled-upon team a free-kick at the point where the foul occurred. Opponents must stand 10 yards (9.14 m) away from the kicker. For fouls occurring within the penalty area (an area around the goal), a free kick 12 yards (11 m) from the goal at the penalty kick mark is awarded only the opponent’s goalkeeper guarding (Lever 2004). The kicker is permitted a running approach to the ball from a maximum of 10 yards (9.14 m) away (at the restraining line).
In conclusion, soccer is tougher sport compared to football because soccer players cannot use their arms or hands when passing the ball to its teammate unlike football, they can kick or pass using their feet or hands. Moreover, the soccer players do not wear padding or headgear, compared to football, during the game which makes this sport tough.
Sports are the activities that require people to conquest the field and it is all about victory and cooperation. There are always competitions to determine the winner and loser, and a friendly handshake would acknowledge defeat and victory. The sports often create a sensation among the spectators and entertain people. There are abundant sports in the world that can play with feet or hands. Soccer and American Football are the main sports that can represent feet and hands sports and these sports are indeed popular among the spectators.
Football and soccer games are very interesting, but there are similarities and differences. Soccer is a fairly straightforward sport and people in the world simply call it football. To prevent confusion, I will use the term soccer to differentiate it from America’s dearest sport, American Football. The most obvious difference between the soccer and aggressive American football is that soccer is played mainly by kicking the ball and it is only the goalkeeper who can handle the ball.
American football, in contrast, is played by throwing and catching the ball like a bulldog attempting to catch the bone thrown by the dog’s owner. In American Football, players require tremendous strength and muscle to prevent injury because they are like crazy bulls that since their target are set, have no mercy; an enemy would get crashed and end up being a pancake. Actions like bone-crushing hits, beating each other and bashing players are often seen in American football. Soccer, in contrast, is not ignorant like American Football.
Soccer players require intelligence, fit body as football requires, but the soccer is a play by the passing plays and intelligent tactics made by managers. Soccer also has physical contact, but players do not intend to do beat each other up because there are referees to protect from an injury. If we are to describe the relationship between soccer and American Football, an old gentleman with a healthy body and an aggressive child would be correct because soccer has been around for 120years while football has been around for not even a hundred years.
American football is virtually loved by only North Americans and refers to football as the worldwide sport by naming their biggest competition title as “World Series”. In the “World Series”, only North American professional teams attend the competition which does not make any sense according to the title. Apparently, they have their own festival within their land calling it “World Series”. For Soccer, they do have a competition named “World Cup” which involves all of the countries in the world. Each continent country has to qualify for the World Cup by winning the qualifying round.
This indicates the soccer is the dominant team sport across South America, Africa, Europe, and Asia and American Football only in North America. American football will guarantee hundred percent excitements, but only for North Americans, perhaps some people around the world. Soccer and American football are worlds apart and this comparison essay proves how those are different. It is your choice to watch which sports you like, but would you like to watch people getting serious injuries or brilliant skills with feet with fabulous team passing plays?
Example #5 – Interesting Ideas
- Footwork is extremely important – whether you’re a guard or post, or a midfielder,…you have to have body awareness, balance, and footwork
- Both sports have a high instance of ankle and knee injuries, most likely because of the nature of cutting in both sports.
- Both sports can be played both indoor and outdoor.
- Both sports have a low barrier to entry (low/no cost to playing the sport, unlike hockey, which requires expensive facilities and equipment), that has helped their worldwide proliferation.
- Basketball is much more influenced by quickness than speed, and soccer is more influenced by speed than quickness. This is evident in the type of conditioning done by both sports (basketball -way more quick and short interval sprinting, and soccer – a lot more long-distance running, in addition to sprints)
- Basketball is a high scoring sport, soccer is not
- Height influences your ability to play basketball, whereas it has almost no impact on soccer
- Basketball you score with your hands and are penalized for touching the ball with your feet. In soccer, you score with your feet and are penalized for touching the ball with your hands.
- basketball is 5 on 5 and any player can go anywhere on the court,…soccer is 11 on 11.
- Basketball is played indoors (officially) and soccer is played outdoors (officially).
I could go on,…but you get the jist.
Both are called “Football” in the main countries where one or the other is a major sport. In the USA, we call the sport “Soccer”. One is a contact sport (American football) the other is not supposed to be full contact. One uses a round ball and cannot be touched with the hands but left on the ground or kicked. The other cannot be allowed to touch the ground but can be carried with the hands.
