For example, an IQ test is given to place children in “gifted programs,” by using these tests these students are ensured that they will receive the best quality of learning at a pace that is just right for them. On the other hand, this test also lets teachers and faculty know which students may need extra help in certain areas in school.
Another reason why psychology is important is, the insight previous research has given us. For example, by studying psychology we learn to understand how the body and mind works. An example of why understanding how the mind and bodywork is, by understanding them we can do the less complicated things in life, such as control stress, manage time, and study more effectively. Another example would be the research done on psychological illnesses. Using psychological research, doctors have now developed medicine and even cures for victims of the illnesses.
Psychology is important to me because it helps me understand myself and why I choose to do some of the things I do in life. Later in life, I plan to have a career as a marriage and family counselor; therefore, psychology is very important to me right now. I use the things I have learned to help others around me but also I use what I have learned to make my life easier.
By knowing the things that psychology teaches, I have learned to manage my time more efficiently, control my stress level, and be a more all-around better person. Psychology is all around us in our everyday lives, it’s in our schools, our careers, and in our social life. If it were not for psychology we would not be as advanced in learning as we are today.

There are many research psychologists in the world today trying to make our lives better through psychology. In the next few paragraphs, I will explore some of the ways they are attempting to use psychology to make our lives better. I will cite examples and studies that were in the video. This summary will help you get a better understanding of the topic of psychology in everyday life.
One of the areas of psychology that are very important is the study of sleep. The study of sleep began in the 1950s and continues today. One of the pioneers was Rosalind Cartwright. She pioneered many of the techniques we still use today in sleep studies. She determined that dreams serve as a regulator for our emotions. That is still a basic premise of sleep studies today.
Another leading researcher in this area is James Moss. Mr. Moss spends many of his waking hours educating the public about sleep deprivation and its many many side effects. He states that being tired during the day is an abnormal state of being.
He also found that in a study, 56% of shift workers fall asleep once a week at work. Being tired reduces productivity and accuracy. He has said that working adults need 8 hours of sleep per night. High school and college students need 9 hrs or more while working adults who are also in school need even more than that. However, these groups of people usually manage 6 or fewer hours a night. He found that sleep is essential for learning. He cites that the first 2 and last 2 hours of an 8-hour sleep cycle are when the memories are made and put into the most accessible part of our minds.
Less than 8 hours of sleep per day, for example, pulling an “all-nighter” and only sleeping 2-3 hours essentially makes you stupid. Likewise, apnea has the same adverse effects as not getting enough sleep. With apnea, you wake up on average 600 times a night. It tends to make you very tired. It leads to memory loss and sleep deprivation. These can lead to other health concerns.
Another researcher Mal Cohen studies the side effects of microgravity on human interaction. This helps us understand better how we interact in normal gravity. He found in his study that blood flows differently in microgravity. One of the things that do is give us facial edema or puffiness of the face and extremities.
This causes problems reading a person’s expressions in microgravity which makes things like lip reading essential. In gravity unlike microgravity, we face each other head up and chin down. This makes it easier for us to understand facial expressions and body posture.
In microgravity, we confront each other in new dimensions which makes it difficult to communicate and understand each other. It’s also very noisy in a spacecraft or module. This makes it essential that we learn to lip read and be more patient with each other. Taking all three of these points of microgravity; facial edema, noisy environment and multiple orientations of the face make communications in a microgravity environment much more difficult.
Through this research, we can learn to understand each other better using different techniques in our gravity. Psychiatrist Nick Kanas at the University of California in San Francisco was given unprecedented access to study gender, cultural differences and relationships about the MiR Spacestation.
He studied 13 astronauts or cosmonauts and 58 ground personnel. In his study, he looked at tension, cohesion, and leadership both in space and at mission control. As well as, the relationship of one with another. A phenomenon emerged called “displacement”. Displacement is the feeling that you don’t get along with someone, your boss for example, and cannot express your feelings to your boss. You get off work and go home and you yell or argue with someone completely uninvolved with what made you angry at work. He found that this interaction occurred between ground control and MiR just like in everyday life.
Psychology plays a very important role in our legal systems such as teaching lawyers ethics and proper ways to interview a witness to get the truth. In some cases, psychologists are called in to evaluate testimony and the value of the information it contains. It is also used to train judges to spot the signs of someone who is unintentionally lying. They also teach lawyers how not to influence testimony by a repetition of questions that can change a person’s perception of the truth.
With conflict resolution involving violence becoming more prevalent we look for new and better ways to solve our conflicts. Jared Curhan of MIT’s Sloan School of Management has developed the Program for Young Negotiators.
This program and its techniques are used in many parts of the world. It focuses on teaching adolescents ways of reducing conflict that does not involve violence. It teaches effective conflict resolution techniques. He sometimes uses examples such as, if you don’t successfully use these techniques, something bad could happen and if you do then something good can happen.
He tries to illustrate the many paths each decision can take. He teaches this using role-play and using alternative strategies to solve problems. Empathizing is one of the more effective strategies he has found. The goal of his program is to teach nonviolent conflict resolution through negotiation. He has found that there are several levels for negotiation and that negotiation is about changing what we want and what we want.
Of all the possible applications that we have looked at and explored, the most important one would be peace through psychology and understanding of our fellow man.

The last way that psychology applies to my life is through Psychological therapies.
The goal of physiological therapies is to help people function in everyday life more efficiently. Therapies are helpful for virtually anyone. Even if you do not have a Psychological problem having a therapist you can trust and talk to can be very helpful for anyone. When I was younger I was very irritable and stressed out all the time.
I always felt like I was not as good as everyone else but the way I acted it seemed that I thought I was better than everyone else. Around the time of this, I was on a Select baseball team and the coach was very hard on us. We would practice weekday after school for three hours. This was very stressful and made me not have time for anything else this is what contributed to most of the stress I was under.
I then went to see a Therapist which as a kid I thought was not going to help. Also, I did not want my friends to know I was going to a therapist because I was afraid they would make fun of me. However, once I started going to meet with him occasionally I could talk about anything and I felt like I could trust him with whatever I said.

Throughout my life, I have had very little motivation toward school. The school was always to easy and never really challenged me. In High School, I never studied for a test and would always get a very good grade on them.
However, when I came to college all of that changed. When I starting going to college classes I retained my old habits from High school; I never studied, never completed homework, and I would procrastinate big projects to the last possible minute. I learned very quickly that college is on a completely different level than High school. My feelings toward school completely changed it presented a challenge which gave me the motivation to do good in school.

It is used everyday in how an individual deals with outside stressors. Psychology can make a stressor not as stressful or you can allow yourself to strive towards certain goals with a positive attitude. It is all about using your mind to alter behaviors in a way best suited for you!!!
We subconsciously use psychology ourselves all the time. Dog training is just applied psychology. So is raising children — at least if you take an active hand.
Every interaction you have with another human being probably involves psychology at some level. The more you’re trying to convince the other person to your side of something, the more likely you’ll be actively using psychology. This is triply true in the dating scene, when we all try to put our best foot forward by envisioning how others see us and how we can look more attractive to them.
The math for Psychology is based on Probability and Statistics and to get to a more specific sense of how to do that, Calculus is necessary. Classes such as Introductory Statistics, Probability Theory, Regression Analysis, and ANOVA courses would greatly help with population samples and analyzing the sort of figures with questions such as how many people are diagnosed with Pervasive Developmental Disorder, Attention Deficit Disorder, etc. and how many of those people are receiving treatment, what percentage of that population is improving, the same, experiencing worsening conditions, and how many of those people are subject to elements x and y, so on and so forth. I’m not a Psychology student, but I know a lot about the applications of Probability and Statistics and their analysis to everyday life.
Example: You just missed a bus. Normally, you’d curse, jump up and down on the spot while screaming your lungs out. However, this would ruin your hair and makeup, and you need to look good for when you get where you are going.
You use Psychology to Not have this mess happen, and you take long and deep breaths that slow your pounding heart rate, and you slowly calm.
Someone stands on your toes, and instead of Killing them, you recognise that it was not done intentionally to cause you hurt and anger, so you accept their apology calmly and you thus avoid a death, an expensive dry cleaning bill, being arrested, a large Lawyer bill and avoid spending an awful lot of time away from your friends in the process too.
