Today, statistics prove that the number one cause of all high school and college dropouts, is the use of bad study skills. As the lack or misuse of studying continues to steadily grow higher, the problem consistently deprives one’s opportunity to gain knowledge, and potential a student might obtain in the future.

Most of the student population is not a substantial threat to the poor use of studying. However, the threat comes from when a student is lazy and not wanting to do the task at hand. The task of participating in-class, as well as at home.

Two years ago I had a Chemistry teacher that could strongly be considered the world’s most boring professor in the entire world of education. His voice sounded exactly like a robot, while his enthusiasm put everyone to sleep in seconds. I can remember one week where he gave 90-minute lectures each day on the different functions of the electrons.

Another reason that made him so boring was his lack of humor. He never had any fun, never laughed, and never smiled. He told one joke the entire semester of my junior year. ” Today we will be lecturing on three different bonds; the ionic bond, compound bond, and James Bond.” I chuckled at the lame joke and then continued to sleep. Every now and then, Mr.Stumpf would occasionally give out pop quizzes over his in-class lectures that I would usually fail due to the lack of attention and participation in class.

Mr. Stumpf also handed each student a three-page packet of worksheets to help us with the chapter we were studying. Each worksheet was worth five points but took at least an hour for each page. So, with my ungodly study habits, I decided to neglect the worksheets since they were only worth fifteen points. And when test time came creeping up, I would be totally unprepared for the material that was covered. So, as the lesson would show, my laziness played a major role in contributing to the D+ I received in Chemistry 101.

Another role in improper study habits is what he/she considers to be studying. I know many people who believe that they studying, but in actuality, they are really just reviewing. One technique that Matt (best friend) used for studying was named the two-minute drill. This technique has consisted of a 120-second review over the material covered in class to prepare for either a test or quiz.

This is an easy method often used by many lazy, unmotivated students of any age who also consider the two-minute drill, the proper way to study. In definition, the two-minute drill is a skill administered when a student flips to the back of the chapter he/she is studying and begins to read the “Chapter Summary” in approximately two minutes or less. During these two minutes, the student reviews all the important points that are covered in the reading, as well as all the vocabulary words that are only in bold lettering.

Matt had to learn it the wrong way when he ignored his first chapter in Psychology when he was a senior at Homestead. Matt is a confident, intelligent, cocky man who believed he could BS every class in high school. Up to his senior year, he never studied much, all he did was review every once in a while. So, as Matt walked into his Psychology class he had just enrolled in for the second semester, he believed that this class was going to be like all the others.

As the first week went by, the teacher, Mr. Sherman, assigned homework each day reassuring everyone in his class that reading is a necessity, and needs to be done. Matt, being the man that he was, totally neglected his statement deciding that the only studying he would be doing was two minutes before the test or quiz.

Sure enough, when the day came for the big 100 point test for chapter one, Matt walked into class early, flipped to the Chapter Summary, and began reviewing the important issues of the Memory, the Brain, and all the vocabulary words they were in bold lettering.

About five minutes later I walked into class prepared for the test, and glanced over and began laughing because I knew that what he was doing was going to bring absolutely no help for the test. In Chapter Summary, it never explains how everything works and what the functions are. I knew that all the information on the test would cover in the reading, not at the end of the chapter.

A couple of minutes into class, the teacher handed out the test and stated that whenever someone is finished, they could it hand it in and leave. So about 30 minutes later I handed in my copy of the test and when I was walking out of the class, I glanced over to see how my friend Matt was doing, and the expression on his face described everything.

After he was finished, he told me about his struggle, and how he was never going to use that two-minute drill again. This story proves that this technique is not a way of studying; it is a way to fail.

A number of causes contribute to poor skills in studying. Chief among them is the lack of time in today’s society. People in college or high school are most often on a daily schedule or plan for the entire week. So, if by chance a person gets behind on schedule, time can be scarce.

Time management is an important factor when it comes to studying. One must consider his/her studies to be important enough to create a time and place where they can accomplish and keep up with their classes. If they don’t, then the student will eventually fall behind where it’s soon time to cram. When a student tries to read, study, and cram everything at once, it is very difficult to remember all material that he/she covered the next day. That’s why a student must consider their classes as a top priority, in which they must study on a daily basis to prevent cramming.

In the middle of December of last year, I wrecked my car and the damage was estimated at around $550. I needed my car for school, so in order to gain money, I decided to work more hours at work to gain extra cash for the repairs. For one entire week, I put in fifty-eight and a half hours of work to cover all my damages and labor costs. What I didn’t consider that week was my schooling and how far I was now behind.

After paying the cost of my car, the next week was hell. I stayed up till about 1:00 A.M. each day for about a week cramming and trying to make-up all the work I had missed in the previous week. Even though I did average on my class assignments and quizzes, I feel I could have done much better if I planned out my schedule ahead of time. Knowing your priorities, and having good time management, can easily prevent cramming for many students.

If the problem of poor study habits continues in today’s high school and college students, then the chance of receiving the amount of knowledge and good grades are slim to none. In order to provide a proper, affective way of studying, students consider each one of their classes as a top priority where they must keep their focus at all times. Because if they don’t, then their opportunities later in life won’t be the same as the people who worked and studied the correct way.

What is a habit? A habit is a settled or regular tendency or practice, especially one that is hard to give up. Every person has a habit. From small, non-dangerous, habits like biting nails or high pitched laughing, to dangerous ones such as smoking, drinking, and reckless behavior. Habits can go unnoticed by people because they vary in seriousness.

Breaking habits varies greatly. It can be as simple as not doing something in the morning, to stopping drugs and alcohol. People often pick up bad habits in their younger years. Some habits people cannot control such as a twitch or an outburst. But most of the habits people are able to overcome and control.

Alcohol poisoning causes deaths in teens and young adults all around the world. When a person ingests too much alcohol it poisons the body, hence the name alcohol poisoning. If someone has alcohol poisoning they will vomit uncontrollably, have seizures, slow breathing, and no sense of rationality or safety. When a person gets intoxicated, based on the level, it could go in many ways.

They could just wake up the next morning with a hangover or die. A hangover is the feeling left behind the day or days after being intoxicated. People experience severe headaches and/or migraines and in some cases dehydration. Another drinking-related activity that is deadly is drunk driving. Drinking and driving kill someone every fifty-three minutes. Every fifty-three minutes a mother and father lose their child because of an alcohol-related accident.

Every ninety seconds alone someone is injured. These deaths and injuries could be easily prevented if people would think before acting. If people would give up their keys or find a designated driver 10,000 people a year wouldn’t lose their lives. Drinking and driving take the lives of many innocent women, children, and men.

The road to recovery of Alcohol abuse starts with realizing you have a problem. Most alcoholics won’t admit they have a problem. They consume more alcohol to try to fix their problems. When trying to quit people need to set goals for themselves. Set a goal to not take in more than a certain amount of alcohol.

A habit, by definition, is an act that is repeated by a person without the individual even being aware that they continuously display a certain behavior. There are many bad habits a person can develop over time including; drug habits, eating disorders, and many other undesirable behaviors.

These habits can all be broken to result in positive outcomes. Many habits considered to be bad require a person to make specific changes in their life in order to conquer the habit in question. There are a plethora of different steps and/or tasks that can be used to assist a person in breaking an unwanted habit. One of the first steps that must be completed by a person wishing to end a detrimental habit is becoming aware of their situation.

In some instances, this requires the person in question to admit to themselves that they exhibit problematic behavior. This act of admitting to one’s self that they repeat negative acts or thoughts is essential to the elimination of their habits. With this in mind, you have to be aware of an issue before it can be resolved.

Knowing the habit is present and affecting your life in a negative fashion is a very important step within this process. Many people have different things in their lives that they would like to change. A step that could be used to determine which habit to change first in their life would be to prioritize. Prioritizing is something you can do in order to weigh the pros.

There are a lot of good habits such as smiling al~ays, greeting teachers, helping, wake up early, exercise and habits needed to become a good student. Of course, we know that everyone likes people with these kinds of habits. While polite habits include greeting teachers and helping people.

The attitude needed in becoming a good student includes studying always, hardworking, reading books, and waking up early. The second habit is bad habits. Speaking of bad habits, rm sure all of you have your own bad habits. One of the many habits is being unpleasant. Some people like to make unpleasant things to annoy people.

For instance, being rude, uncourteous and the worst of all is bullying people. Mostly, rude people do not face you when talking and they often talk loudly. Being uncourteous has almost the same meaning as rude and it also means impolite. While bullying is also forcing. The third part is a dirty habit. I think all of you had already known what dirty habit is.

Substitute affirmations to materialize thoughts and elimination of bad habit- There are always some ways that are good for us to use when we feel vulnerable to developing bad habits for example, following weight gain, one can use the affirmation that helps him or her in developing walking schedule associated with a reward.

“I am getting slimmer because I am trying to walk 20 minutes daily at 7 am, seven days a week”. This thought not only triggers the mind with motivation to respond to the weight loss regimen but also to walk daily for a few minutes without any forceful effort.

Identify and discard the triggers- another purpose of identifying the triggers that leads you to crave addictive cycle repetition is to resolve them before they continue and make it harder to break the chain. For example, events, places, people, and certain situations or timings are the main triggers. For a smoker, triggers may be friends, bars, empty homes, etc.

To prevent smoking and replacing it with something else, spend less time at the home alone, less time with friends who ask to smoke or trigger to smoke. Avoid going to the bar and other places where smoking cannot be denied. Similarly, emotional eating triggers might be a time that someone spends alone, sleepless nights, breakup, failure in exams, etc. In this case, it is better to watch TV, listen to music or watch something funny. Changing the room’s ambiance and setting up a messy wardrobe are two more treatable solutions.

Take help from others- any task is difficult to follow when someone is fighting alone. Getting social support makes things easy: joining a support group voluntarily or showing some dedication towards a social cause to utilize the emotional energies. That way, you will less likely to become a victim of a bad habit. Define to you what you call a bad habit. Then, write those things down to alter them with some healthy habits. No one can quit smoking or drinking and gambling overnight. We always need someone to hold us in the time of need.

Unless you start pairing with someone you cannot set you free from the addiction to a bad habit. It is not necessary that you join a large group to progress; one friend who is committed to leaving a bad habit similar to yours is enough. You both can support each other and can grow out of the loss really well. In this way, a reward would be joint happiness and celebration.

Use identification- it is a process to identify oneself with those who you want to become. For example, if you would like to be sober then make friends who are in recovery for years take their inspiration, tips, and experiences to follow the path. Live with those who are the same, as you want to become. No one can underestimate the power of getting advice and inspiration.

Visualization is not only a process to adopt in the start but also to follow until the end. After you complete your regular practice of manifesting new habits in your real life. Materializing the thoughts of success is the next step. See yourself into a new lifestyle, into a life of sobriety and healthy eating. This can be enjoyed anytime and anywhere. Build your new identity and stabilize it on daily basis to welcome success soon around you.

A habit, be it a good one or a bad one, takes 28 days to acquire. So if you do something consistently for 28 days, you are likely to gain this habit. Continuing this new habit at regular intervals – eg. every Monday, Wednesday & Friday, or maybe every morning – will mean that you are more likely to keep it.

Habits can be learned behavior – eg, your mum standing over you while you brush your teeth every morning & night so that eventually you are so in the habit of doing it, you either do it automatically or your teeth feel horrible if you don’t so you do it anyway.

Habits can be a way of providing yourself with comfort – thumb sucking in kids reproduces the feeling of being fed by the mother.

How to stop – cultivate a different way of behaving. For example, smokers who are trying to stop being told if you associate your first ciggy of the day with your first cup of tea in the kitchen until you break the habit of smoking, drink juice in the living room, for example.

Well, first you need ideas to help you write a paper. make a web with bad habits and good habits. branch of from those the habits (it would be interesting to see which habits can be considered bad and good) then make a list of what makes up a relationship. the behaviors, the feelings. and see which habits aid or hurt those feelings and behaviors.

When you do that you have your points for your entire paper. write the paper then do the intro last. what should be in there is an introduction to what you just wrote. read what you wrote then think of something that frames what you said. don’t worry once you have written it, writing a summation of your ideas is much easier since you are more familiar with them by that point.

Why can fast food be a bad habit?

Fast food gets you into an unhealthy eating style like you just eat on the run but you end up eating non-healthy non-homecooked meals with all these additives and unhealthy fats that end up (if you continue to maintain this habit of buying fast food whenever you’re hungry as opposed to cooking)
