Why Wal-Mart Is Good Essay

Persuasive Argument Paper

This, right here, is the beginning of the end for our great nation. Wal-Mart is taking over the supermarket industry and it is up to us to stop it. Wal-Mart is starting to censor the music we know and love without even alerting the buyer, taking away needed healthcare benefits, and taking advantage of workers by not even paying the minimum wage. This is why Wal-Mart is not good and must be stopped. Music is an artistic way of expressing himself or herself, and Wal-Mart is taking this freedom from them. They are doing this by refusing to sell them as is, “some places Wal-Mart is the only place to buy CDs or tapes…censored CDs are proliferating in Wal-Mart’s bins, [and] in many cases without [even] being identified as such” (Source C). Wal-Mart is censoring CDs and tapes to their liking without even letting it be known to the buyer of such non-sense. Wal-Mart should not be allowed to choose what the buyer can and cannot listen to, if the buyer wishes to listen to a certain type of music, and are willing to spend their own hard-earned cash to get it, then that person should be able to get that CD or Tape.

Wal-Mart does not even let the artists or the music industry know that they are editing it. A spokesman for Wal-Mart, Betsy Reithemeyer, said “we do not talk to artists; we do not go to the recording industry.” (Source C). Now it is one thing to disrespect the buyer by selling them music that has been edited and not telling them, but not telling the artists is just wrong. If Wal-Mart is going to edit an artist’s way of expressing themselves then it has to be agreed upon and set up together. For all Wal-Mart knows, the artist could not like the way Wal-Mart edited it and try to back out of the deal or rework the edit. This madness needs to be stopped, Wal-Mart is bad and we need to stop letting Wal-Mart do what they want. Now, many people have probably heard about the economic crisis where everybody is losing their jobs, healthcare benefits, and everything.

The U.S. is probably in their worse recession of all time, yet Wal-Mart is not giving good healthcare to its workers and their worker’s spouses, children, their workers whole immediate and in some cases extended families, statistics show that “46% of Wal-Mart workers’ children are uninsured or on Medicaid” (Source R). Now think how would someone survive without healthcare, how about their children survive without healthcare?

Children need healthcare; nobody knows when something will happen. It is not like other retailers are having the same problem the Statistics show that it is “29% for large retailers and 32% for all retailers” (Source R). Other retailers are getting over half of their workers and their worker’s families insured. What Wal-Mart is doing is inexcusable; people are struggling every day to get by and try to provide for their families, besides finding a way to get food on the table every day they should not also have to worry about health care their work should already take care of that for them.

Some might say that Wal-Mart is the largest employer in the U.S. with over one million workers but they are out of the country and underpaid. Unfortunately, since they are in other countries that other countries government controls what happens like when “China eliminated 200,000 U.S. jobs” (Source Q). Some jobs for Wal-Mart are off-shore, which is bad for the U.S. economy because they have no control over their pay and or how they are treated. Wal-Mart does not even show the least amount of concern for these workers. Even when these jobs are in the U.S. there are “numerous wage-and-hour violations lawsuits filled [against Wal-Mart] across the country” (Source Q).

Many people are suing Wal-Mart because the jobs they are getting are not even paying minimum wage. If people cannot even get minimum wage for the jobs they are doing then there is no point in doing that job. Minimum Wal-Mart might be giving and hiring a lot of people for many jobs, which makes most people think that Wal-Mart is helping people and U.S. economy and jobless people but at the wage, Wal-Mart is paying, it is not helping anything. Wal-Mart is becoming too big of a supermarket industry and is starting to take over the retail business in all the wrong ways. Wal-Mart should not be allowed to scam Americans like this, it is just wrong. The American people deserve a lot better than what Wal-Mart is giving them. The funny thing is almost every person in the U.S. buy gas and Wal-Mart, unlike Costco, Market Street, and Kroger, does not even have pumps. Wal-Mart must be stopped in its tracks before this national epidemic gets any worse.
