What Does It Mean To Be Human?

There are too many definitions and concepts of what it means to be human, but only five of them stood out to me. The first definition is that to be human is to be made in the image and likeness of God. The second definition explains the concept that humans came from the soil and return to the soil when they die. The third concept defines a human being as a person with dignity. The fourth definition of being human is to have free will, and the last concept of being human is to be blessed with a conscience. I will be explaining these concepts in further detail in this assignment.

First of all, God the Creator created us, humans, in the image and likeness of Himself. God created us, humans, as the only living creatures on earth who are able to recognize and love Him. Each and every one of us portray a different characteristic that reveals who God is. That’s why we’re all special and unique. God’s created the universe for us, humans, so we are called to serve and love God in return. Next, the creation story about Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden teaches us that humans came from the soil. Furthermore, everything we eat and drink also comes from the soil, and whatever we eat becomes part of us. Therefore, we become part of the soil (once again) when we die. This concept explains that being human is to be part of the soil from which we came from.

Being human also means being a person with dignity. Our dignity is rooted in our creation because we were created in the image and likeness of God. From the moment of conception, we were all given dignity. Therefore, our bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, so we must respect the bodies of others and ourselves. We were all given free will when they were born, but it’s our responsibility to decide what is good and what is evil. We are not supposed to misuse or take advantage of our free will. We were given free will to direct ourselves to our true good that we were meant for. The last concept about being human is to be blessed by a conscience. We were all blessed by conscience to tell us what to do at a specific moment. It helps us to decide if our actions will be good or evil.

In conclusion, all of these concepts explain what it means to be human. Obviously, there are many more concepts that interpret the meaning of being human, but it would be too much to explain in this little assignment. I’d also like to say that out of all the concepts I’ve explained, I believe that the most important aspect of being human is to be created in the image and likeness of God because it gives us the message that God wants us to be like him.
