- The government frequently talks about the need for “tax reform,” that is, a changing of tax laws, arguably to make things better for the people. Many of us are concerned about taxes, for various reasons. Some people say that taxes are too high, and they should be lower. Of course, if the government has less revenue, they either have to cut spending or increase the national debt. Some people don’t like the idea of their taxes going to fund certain things, like the arts, or welfare, or wars that they don’t agree are just. Still, others contend that the government wastes a lot of money. Some would argue that the “war on drugs” has been a waste of money, particularly as it applies to marijuana. Finally, libertarians say that most taxation is a form of theft since the government takes our earnings without permission.
- Using any and all ethical theories we have discussed during the course to weigh in on the issues raised above, as well as any other issues related to economic justice in general.
According to the excerpt given, it seems clear that different sections of people have different views on tax collection. As well, some part of the population also believes, it is right to pay taxes for reforming the country and bringing about changes for the betterment of society. We also see weighted arguments, that favor the reasoning of people who see a negative aspect of paying taxes, such as wars, arts, and welfare. Nonetheless, the government doesn’t favor certain groups of people with a unified need, instead, it needs to cater to a very large population with diversified needs.

Thus, the people’s concern pertaining to the wastage of tax money is in the wrong. From an ethical point of view, the tax money is being used for the welfare of people, so it cannot be claimed as a “wastage” of money. People are getting the benefits, whether or not it fulfills the needs of a large group of people or not. Tax money is meant to be used for the good of people. That has the ultimate outcome that actually should matter. Whether an excess amount is used for a certain reason/problem is a question that is being asked by the common people as well. For example, in the “war on drugs” issue, the government strongly wants to rid society of the bad influence of the circulation of drugs in society. We have been witness to the hollowing of society from the inside because of this issue. Thus, the government’s plan to tackle this problem is strongly supported by me.
