Mahatma Gandhi Essay

Mahatma Gandhi said, “We must become the change we want to see in the world.” Reflect on your world and your place within it. Discuss how you have changed or plan to effect change within that world. The present world is troubled by violence. It seems that violence can occur anywhere in today’s community. The increasing violence in our communities marks an indication of our decaying human nation. Mahatma Gandhi was a strong devotee of non-violence and developed his own philosophy on non-violence. In his philosophy, greed, possessiveness, and selfishness are the main factors that influence our materialistic and greedy lifestyle. With Gandhi’s teachings and actions being learned in our present society, some people today do not only seek materialistic possessions but also compassion, peace and truth.

The more possessions we obtained, the more we have to guard them against those who desire for them. It generates envy which leads to jealousy, and from jealousy, it leads to hatred. People will use the brute force generated by jealousy, fear and hatred to acquire assets that the poor cannot attain through compassion. Fear is the main seed of violence that is planted into our present society. The fear of suffering and losing our jobs, possessions and loved ones created our present disturbing attitude towards each other. Acts of violence generate anger in the victim. If the victim is unable to master the anger carefully, it would be like adding more gas to the fire. In a later stage, the victim would use that anger to apply violence on others.

Even if we change individually, the tank is still adding gas to the fire. No one is willing to change in unison. We will spend generations, waiting for each other to change first. To change within oneself, an individual must develop a strong foundation of respect, appreciation, trust and acceptance. Appreciation for our humanity is the first basic foundation to be achieved during the transition. If an individual learns to appreciate his fellow human beings, others will learn to appreciate the individual back. Respect is a principle that must be fed into the individual. The individual must treat others with respect, be tolerant of any differences that he or she faces, and also respect different cultures, different ways of life and different beliefs that people have. It will slowly lead to harmony. The next step is to learn how to accept the differences that we will have between each other.

If there is an acceptance between human beings, there will be unity within humanity. The final step is to understand our role as humans in today’s society. We must understand who we are, what we are and why we are here. If humans do not understand these three reasons, then the human race will soon be an extinct race. Once we have learned how to change individually, the next and final step is to change ourselves as a whole. Firstly, we must get rid of the curiosity that we have in ourselves, families, neighbourhoods, communities, countries, and lastly in our world. As the English physician and philosopher, Sir T. Brown once claimed, “Men often swallow falsities for truths, dubiosities for certainties, possibilities for feasibilities.” Secondly, we must get rid of the violence that we create from the seeds of hatred. Lastly, we must get rid of the envy that we have within us.

Everyone is unique in their own way. With uniqueness “comes” talent and ability. We are greedy by not using our ability to help the needy and unfortunate and instead, using it for our personal gain. If we abolish these differences, the slanting scale of humanity will be balanced and unity is established. In conclusion, Gandhi was the pebble and his words and actions were the ripples in the pond. He was important that influenced people to make changes within the world. Following Gandhi by example would be my first step to making changes within myself and hope others will follow in my footsteps to make that change in our world. We have to be the pebble in the pond that causes the ripples in our current society. Encouraged by these enlightened words from the Great Mahatma Gandhi, “You must not lose faith in humanity. Humanity is an ocean, if a few drops of the ocean are dirty, the ocean does not become dirty.” I will put faith in myself and in others who will make and made that change.
