Love is Lust Essay

Upon reading the play, Romeo and Juliet, readers could clearly determine the kind of relationship shared by the two main characters. Shakespeare’s famous tragic play shows the lustful relationship that transpired between Romeo and Juliet. At the beginning of the story, Romeo found himself heartbroken by Rosaline because she did not have any feelings for him. After he laid his eyes on Juliet, he forgot all about Rosaline and started to fall in love with the former. Immaturity, inconsistent love, and attraction based solely on physical attraction explain the lustful desires shared by Romeo and Juliet.

There is no real love at a young age. Adults have different views about love from teenagers. During the period of adolescence, we misinterpret love with infatuation. Innocent little Juliet is still “a stranger in the world” (I.v.8) and according to her father, “She hath not seen the change of fourteen years” (I.ii.9). It tells the reader that since Juliet is still fourteen, she does not know anything about love and marriage. This idea does not only concern Juliet but also Romeo.

Love disappears easily when you only think it is love. In the play, Romeo’s feelings for Rosaline fades after he found out that she did not like him back. Romeo describes her as someone who “makes huge waste” (I.i.215) because she had no plans on having children with him. Romeo remarked that Rosaline is responsible for great waste since her beauty will not live on and because he is only after sexual pleasures with her. Upon thinking of this thought, Romeo developed feelings towards Rosaline because of her looks.

In addition to the comparison of ages, and the quick loss of passion for Rosaline, Romeo’s physical attraction to Juliet is also a cause of their lust. Their love begins with love at first sight idea. Romeo realizes he has just found true love: “Did my heart love just now? Forswear it, sight! For I ne’er saw true beauty till this night.” (I.v.52-53). At this moment, Romeo loved Juliet by beauty, not because of her personality. This is scenario is common with the youth in our society.

The tragic tale of the supposed love story of Romeo and Juliet has demonstrated the true meaning of teenage romance that includes being young, lack of maturity and experience of being in a relationship, and have a huge sexual appetite. Being in love in an age of immaturity is not a good idea. Aside from the fact that it could distract you from your studies, unfortunate things may occur. Romeo and Juliet never had a relationship before they became a couple. They did not know what love really was because they were only after sexual intercourse. After reading the text, we could conclude that it was not loved they share, it was lust.
