Fill in the blank in the following statement and discuss: “They don’t make _______ like they used to.”

Friendship and human relations have changed greatly since the invention of the most widespread vehicles and with the growth of geographic mobility. Thus, I would like to fill in the blank space with the word ‘friends’. “They don’t make friends like they used to”, meaning primarily the contemporary world population.

In the middle of the nineteenth century, it was not conventional to talk before interlocutors were introduced to each other, so it was quite difficult to make friends. In addition, understanding of the word ‘friend’ was quite strange then: a friend was primarily a relative or a relative of one’s relative, or a person of the same social circle, because people at that time used to make friends exclusively with their narrowest surroundings and, as an alternative, with their coworkers.

With the emergence of the so-called pen-friendship (after the First World War), people became much less formal in making friends. The new approach to friendship allowed perceiving friends as interesting interlocutors (regardless of the social affiliation) and understanding people who were ready to support and help. Pen-friendship provided communication between people from different countries, but the main problem of this unstable relationship was mechanical: people often changed their accommodations, and mail services functioned irregularly.

The newest Internet technologies allow making friends in several minutes: by using blogs, live journals, or ICQ. The Internet provides virtual real-time communication between interlocutors, and web-cameras help friends see each other at an unlimited distance. On the other hand, attitude to friendship has become much more careless, and people lose their friends as easily as they acquire them because friendship is no longer perceived as a priceless and ‘fragile’ aspect of human relationships.

To conclude, modern Americans make friends dissimilar to their ancestors, and the perception of friendship has also been modified.
