Explain the origins of the Quran and the importance with which it is regarded by Muslims

Prophet Muhammad (peace is upon him) was born in 570 in the city of Mecca. His father Abdullah died before he was born, and his mother Aminah died when he was six years old. Allah did this to him because he was testing him, how is he going to control his anger or he will do the opposite which is aggressive and he will disobey Allah but prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) controlled his anger he was calm. He was raised by his grandfather Abu Muttalib until the age of eight and after his grandfather’s death by his uncle Abu Talib, Muhammad then started to work with his uncle to earn living as a business and trader. When he was 25, Muhammad married a wealthy widow Khadija; she was 15 years older than him. The prophet and his wife give birth to six children two sons who died in childhood, and four daughters. Muhammad started preaching in Mecca in about 610.

During that time Muhammad (peace be upon him) used to spend nights in a cave in mount hira to pray and meditate, he was praying mount because in Mecca the people were worshipping different idols and people were doing bad things such as gambling etc. In year 610 in the month of Ramadan when Muhammad was meditating, he had a vision and angel Gabriel said to him Iqra which means recite. But Rasulullah (peace be upon him) didn’t know how to read or write so he said I cannot read. Angel Gabriel embraced him and after releasing him he repeated to Muhammad qiran. Muhammad’s answer was the same I cannot read. He asked Muhammad again to repeat after him and said “in the name of your Lord who created man from a drop of blood: read in the name of the Almighty God who taught man the use of the pen and taught him what he knew not before…”.

Muhammad recited this verse until he knew it perfectly”. Muhammad was very scared at that time he confused about that is happening to him. While he was walking out of the cave he heard the same voice called him and this time saying “O Muhammad truly you are the messenger of God. And I am his angel, Gabriel. After that angel, Gabriel visited him many times over 23 years. Muhammad was shocked he went home where he said what happened to him in mount hira and his wife convinced him that what he had seen was real. She was the first person who believed him and then his cousin Ali, Gabriel taught Muhammad the verses and Rasulullah passed all the messages to the people of Mecca, to do good things, and to serve the one and true God, Allah. He taught that man is God’s slave it is their duty to obey him. And people recorded every verse of the Quran to the book and through the years of Prophet Muhammad’s life, Allah gives him verses through angel Gabriel and Rasulullah separate the words of Allah to people and people recorded into the book and the full book of verses called Quran.

People who knew how to write properly was called to record the verses and Zayd ibn Thabit was one of them, they wrote the verses in stone or in leaves that Muhammad give it to them and after year’s people copied the verses from the stones and the leaves and after prophet Muhammad died Abu Bakir and hafiz’s made the verses into the book which is called Quran. The Quran, the last revealed Word of God. Quran is written in Arabic and it can be translated into other languages but it won’t be fully correct, Arabic is a complete language and most of the words in Arabic cannot be translated therefore people should always recite Quran in Arabic. Muslims always perform wudu before touching the Quran. If someone is bleeding or when a woman is in their periods they cannot touch the Quran until they stopped bleeding and after that, they should wash.

When one is not reading or reciting from the Qur’an, it should be closed and stored in a clean, respectable place. Nothing should be placed on top of it and should not be placed on the floor or in a bathroom. To further show respect for the sacred text, those who are writing it should use a good handwriting pen and those who are reading should read it clearly. A Muslim should always show respect to Quran. Muslims read Quran in privacy in order not to be interrupted. A person who memories the Quran by heart is called a hafiz. The Quran is divided into 114 Surahs or chapters and each chapter consists of individual verses. There are 6,348 verses in Quran. The surahs are in different lengths, some surahs are a few lines long while others run for many pages. The longest surah is al Baqarah (Ch. 2) which contents 287 verses while Surah al author (Ch. 108) is the shortest with only a few verses.

The short surah is used during the five prayers i.e. al- Fatiha and the longest chapters contain the stories of Muhammad. Muslims use the Quran in their daily life, Passages from the Qur’an are recited during each of the five daily prayers and they recite the Quran after praying or before there is no certain time for the Muslims to recite Quran. When a Muslim is happy or when they are sad they recite Quran just to thanks Allah or to ask him for help. Muslims send their kids to madrasa to learn Quran while they are young because they believe that it is very important for a Muslim to learn Quran and to follow the rules. They read Quran in their marriages, charities, funerals etc.

The importance of the Quran is that it is a path to Allah; it is a way to find Allah… and it is such a way that Allah likes us to find him. Muslims believe that Quran is the word of god and it was given to Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). The Qur’an tells us about what happened before and what is yet to come and it is a reference for judging between us. It’s the true guide for humanity; it teaches everyone how to lead a good life, avoiding alcohol so that you can concentrate on Allah, how to respect people. It guides Muslims to give pray, give charity, fasting, and pilgrimage it also teaches the rules of marriages, divorce and also contains the saying of prophet Muhammad (PBUH).
