He was born in Malaga, Spain on October 25, 1881. He was the son of Jose Ruiz Blasco, an art teacher and Maria Picasso y Lopez. Picasso was raised in Malaga until he could get on his feet and take care of himself. Picasso went through some hard times; as a child, he dealt with poverty, his younger sister died, and Spain’s economy was crumbling. As a child, Picasso was a great painter. He drew pictures here and there of his cousins, his mom and dad, and friends. At the age of 15, he was at the top of his class at Barcelona’s School of Fine Arts. At 16, he won a gold medal for painting a mural called Science and Charity.

Picasso went through different phases in his life, because of what he felt and what was going on in his life. In 1904, Pablo finally moved away and settled in the city of Paris. He found the Paris street life fascinating. His pictures of people, dance halls, and cafes, show how he felt about Paris life.

During Picasso’s Blue Period, he used different shades of blue. He used blue to express human misery; the pictures portray blind figures, beggars, alcoholics, prostitutes, and sick people.

This Blue period didn’t last long and after it came his Rose period. Now Picasso felt more relaxed, calm and warm. he used warm colours in his paintings and now included comedians and carnival performers, all shown in busy Paris streets. Through the years of 1904-1905, he would visit the circus from time to time and study the performers, the way they look, their physical appearance, and their characteristics. He met more people during his Rose Period including the poet Max Jacob, the writer Guillaume Apollinaire, art dealers like Ambroise VBollard and Daniel-Henry Kahnweiler
