Secondly, there are five disciplines in Gymnastics. These disciplines are women’s pair, men’s pair, mixed pair, women’s trio, and men’s four. Each pair or group performs routines that include tumbling skills, partner balances, and tempo skills. Balance skills highlight the gymnast’s strength and flexibility through pyramids and static positions of the top. Tempo skills involve somersaulting and twisting with landings on the floor or catches by a bottom partner. Gymnastics events are separated into two groups, men’s and woman’s gymnastics. In the men’s gymnastics, the event includes floor exercise, pommel horse, still rings, vault, parallel bars, high bar; while the woman’s event includes vault, uneven bars, balance beam and floor exercise. For each routine, the gymnast begins with less than a perfect score. For the women‘s team, the competitor starts with a 9.00 while men start with an 8.60. Judges make deductions for flaws in execution and for any missing requirements in the composition of the routine.

Lastly, at competitions, there are two judging panels which are the chair of the judge’s panel, two difficulty judges, three to four technical execution judges, and three to four artistic judges. The chair of the judge’s panel organizes and supervises the work of the judges on the panel. The difficulty judges, judge the difficulty of the competitor’s exercises.

The execution judges evaluate the exercises for technical faults, while the artistic judges evaluate the performances on structure & composition, choreography, presentation, and originality & creativity. The artistic mark is based out of 5.0 and the execution mark starts from a 10.0. Penalty marks are taken away from the final score if a gymnast isn’t able to meet partners height requirements, time faults, breakdowns, and tariff sheet violations. The judge may award bonus points up to 1.2. Gymnastics skills are divided into six levels of difficulty. Levels range from “A,” which is the easiest to “Super-E” the most difficult. Each routine must have at least 4 “A”, 3 “B” and 3 “C” difficulty parts.

In conclusion, gymnastics history goes back over two thousand years, what once used to be used as military training in Greece is now a worldwide sport. Famous gymnasts such as Mary Lou Retton and Larissa Semyonovna Latynina have accomplished gold medals and world titles. Gymnastics have five disciplines such as the women’s pair, men’s pair, mixed pair, women’s trio, and men’s four. There are 9 to 10 judges judging a competition.
