Our contemporary life is becoming increasingly more stressful: employees and students should work long and hard to reach the success in career or attain academic advancements and to create an image of a successful person. It is hard to say whether academic and career success makes people happier, but the only reliable statement is that it takes increasingly more time and energy and leaves few opportunities to relax and have a decent rest.
Human life is a cycle of never-ending routines – today it seems much more clear and evident than fifty years ago. Day by day, people’s behavior becomes gradually more monotonous, and this daily cycle creates a kind of prison inside which individual locks himself. This peculiar incarceration creates an additional problem: it becomes more difficult to concentrate on something different from the components of this daily routine, i.e. to fill one’s head with revulsive thoughts and relax. American society seems extremely successful in accepting the newest business trends and strategies, yet they are not always able to have a rest. In spite of the development of the entertainment industry, Americans use to have their notebooks and cell phones even when they are kayaking or taking sunbaths – first of all, in order to be available for their coworkers and managers. This means, they are always ready to mobilize themselves and to starts working even during their ‘canonical’ holidays.

In addition, at rest, Americans usually discuss issues, associated with their job, even if there are a number of revulsive things to discuss and enjoy. Leisure time also turns into work, because American perfectionism and the need for continuous succession are extrapolated into their leisure activities, and it is quite hard to relax when one wishes to be good at anything -either in career or in leisure sports.
To sum up, American perfectionism and the inability to catch the wave of pastime point to the fact that many of my compatriots seem incapable of relaxing and having fun.
