Good afternoon, ladies, gentlemen and Chair of Governors. I stand here today in the hope that I may be able to highlight to you the benefits of keeping our fantastic school open during the evenings. I am passionate about the plan proposed by myself and a number of other students in which we put forward a request to keep the school open every evening, and I truly hope that by the end of our valuable time together, you too will feel the same way. I have felt for many years that a large amount of classroom time has been taken up disciplining and sorting out problems caused by students not completing homework set by members of staff. I believe that keeping the school open during the evenings would largely solve this problem. On average, 80% of students who have not completed homework claim to have had problems with their computer or printer.
These excuses range from a lack of ink in a printer to an internet failure. We are extremely fortunate to have a reliable printer and internet connection at this school; however, we do not currently make full advantage of these facilities. I propose to keep the school open for 5 hours during the evening, this way many students could choose to remain at school for a few hours to complete their studies before returning home to relax. There are many distractions at home, causing students to be unable to complete homework. On the other hand, the atmosphere at school is one primarily aimed towards studying and work, therefore students would not be distracted and could very easily complete all their work on time.

Following on from my previous point, many students have younger siblings who can at times be rowdy and therefore make studying for exams difficult, greatly reducing their chance of success. The students have no choice but to go home to study yet we have a calm, quiet library specially prepared for this purpose. Why is that we have chosen not to use it at the time it is needed most? I once met a student who was predicted and was perfectly capable of achieving 11 As at GCSE. Regrettably, he only received 2 As, 2 As, 4 Bs and 3 Cs. This was a disastrous result for him, but following analysis, a quick realization was made. This boy was in an unfortunate position; he had a two-year-old brother and a five-year-old sister in the house. It was impossible for her to concentrate, after all, as hard as you try; you cannot keep two and five-year-olds close to silent. I have no doubt that this situation proves to you the value of our library.
A further problem, currently caused by the lack of evening activities or open facilities after school hours is that many students choose to ‘hang out’ outside school grounds as they have missed the bus or do not have parents that are able to collect them due to work or other commitments. In my opinion, having the school open in the evening or providing exciting evening activities could deter students from causing trouble. I am sure you will agree that we do not want the school gaining a bad reputation from a few students who have nothing to do with their time. Why should a few students’ behaviours waste our teachers’ time and effort to build a good reputation for the school? The previous points I made were for the benefit of school children, but we can also open up the school facilities for people in our community to use. Many people love music, but maybe aren’t able to play or practice much as they might not have an instrument at home, but we have 10 music rooms full of instruments, which they can use.
We can charge them a little per hour, which will help make us a profit. We also have the sports hall, astroturf and gym, which can be used by the public. A monthly fee could be applied to this, which would help us buy better equipment. This would be much appreciated by people if we make the costs lower than other leisure centres. I’m sure this can tackle the problem of the equipment being useless at night. Extra staff will not need to keep the school open in the evening as I’m sure there will be volunteers and some teachers will be willing to do some fun activities after school. If you employ new staff, it will cost more money, but if existing teachers are paid a little bit more, then they’ll be more than happy to stay a bit longer after school finishes. The costs for the teachers’ payments and insurance of equipment will not be a worry as the profit I make will be far greater than our costs.
We will fit in some new security cameras so if there is any damage to equipment, we can get the culprit to pay. Students will be raising money to buy the new cameras as they are quite expensive. Why shouldn’t we keep our school open when other schools are doing it? Our data proves that they’re making a profit and the reputation of the schools has increased. The students will organise everything, so why not give it a try and keep the school open 5 hours extra for the next month. If everything works fine, then we can keep the school open in the evenings and if there are problems, then we can go back to the normal way and close the school early. I have made a number of points this evening. The time I have available with you tonight is however limited, so if you wish to hear my many other reasons for believing that our school should be kept open during the evenings; or simply would like to view my plan in further detail, please do not hesitate to see me afterwards. I would like to thank you for your time and hope you agree with me that we should keep this school open for five extra hours during the evening.
