Analytical Essay

An analytical essay is an essay that analyzes a certain subject matter and usually answers the questions of what or why or who. An analytical essay is not just any piece of writing nor just a simple article filled with personal opinions but rather, for it to be very effective and a good one, it should be more of a reasonable response to a question. It must have a single, logical, and well-ordered argument, and the argument must be backed up by logic, evidence, and analysis. Deductive reasoning is usually utilized in this type of essay. The thesis statement, which is part of the introduction, must be broad and may be composed of two to three consecutive sentences, and should be able to define your major argument.

However, it is necessary that the main body of your essay, which is usually three paragraphs long, must be able to prove your point. Finally, your conclusion has to summarize your main points and emphasize to the reader why your analysis is correct. A good analytical essay example is one that convinces the reader or makes her rethink her opinion about the subject.

Sample Analytical Essay

“Losing weight is never an easy task yet the majority of the population needs to do it. Besides, cutting down on calories intake and doing some exercise, I believe it is imperative that we have to also have a change of lifestyle, and if you are smoking to lose some weight, you have to quit. All the hard work done to remain healthy by losing weight will go down the drain if you keep smoking.”

“Abdominal obesity is linked to the development of high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, and high cholesterol. All these factors lead to atherosclerosis or the hardening of the arteries leading to stroke or heart attack. However, studies show that smoking alone can lead to atherosclerosis by harming the inner lining of your blood vessels and arteries and it also increases bad cholesterol (LDL) and lowers good cholesterol (HDL). Patients under 50 years old who suffer from heart attacks are smokers.

Therefore, even if you lose that weight you are in no better condition if you have not quit smoking yet. Nevertheless, studies also show that those who quit smoking may gain extra pounds in a few months but can lose them all after six months, and are guaranteed to look, feel and smell a lot better than before.”

“Why do people want to lose weight? The answer is simple they want to be healthier, live longer lives, and enjoy it. However, without a lifestyle change, continuing smoking will keep you at the same medical risk. You might have lost those extra pounds but you’ll be suffering just the same with heart attack, stroke, or cancer and all of these are fatal. Therefore, if you want to be healthy, lose that weight and quit smoking and you definitely will live and enjoy life like never before.”

The above sample analytical essay, although short, proves to be a good one since the argument is organized around a single thought which is to quit smoking, it is logical, somewhat controversial, and a well-ordered argument. Scientific studies related to the above article have proven the analyst’s point and backed up the argument. Finally, the conclusion proved her main point, losing weight and smoking just don’t jive. One must quit smoking to be healthy. Otherwise, you are just cheating yourself.
