American family life would be more stable if parents, not the couples involved, arranged the marriages of their children. Agree or disagree.
As one knows from history and from biblical principles, the destiny and fate of children are usually decided by their parents, because seniors are considered wiser and more practical, whereas young persons are impulsive dreamers, whose behavior is controlled and regulated merely by their emotions.
First of all, I would like to mention that the time has changed. Although prevalent marriages, arranged by parents or other senior relatives, were characteristic for previous centuries, nowadays we can see the growth of youngster’s independence and self-organization. Young people of the 19th century, especially young ladies, started their careers quite late or never worked because they were able to afford ‘idleness’. Modern youngsters start working and earning their independence at a very early age and thus gain priceless life experience in human (especially, cross-gender) relationships. Nowadays, people usually get married at the age of 25 or even later, i.e. at their most productive and creative age, when they are able to handle any aspect of life easily – career, family, hobby, and, at the same time, are consistent and self-sufficient personalities, responsible for their lives and capable of taking additional care and responsibility.

Critics suggest that there is no remedy against so-called ‘youth mistakes’ (leading to divorce), so there are parents who would rather arrange the marriages of their children than allow ‘immature persons’ to do it on their own. Consequently, they choose a person, who will be ‘suitable’ first of all for them, and their child’s opinion becomes a secondary issue. Yet, they forget that ‘parentally chosen fiancee’ will become a spouse for their child, not for them.
As one might assume if the marriage is imposed on their child, he/she is likely to show the ‘spirit of rejection’ and divorce in order to do a bad turn to them, so American society would not be more stable and healthy if parents arranged the marriages of their children.
